Populum Introduces Rescued Pets CBD Program To Raise Awareness
by Gunhee Park
Each year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter animal shelters throughout the United States. Of these, two to three million animals are euthanized, and the Humane Society estimates that 80% of these animals -- about 1.6 to 2.4 million of them -- are either healthy or treatable, and could have been adopted into new homes.
“Two to three million animals are euthanized each year. 80% of these animals...are either healthy or treatable, and could have been adopted into new homes.”
A few years, I got involved in and soon became passionate about rescuing animals. Since 2015, my wife and I have rescued 2 dogs, fostered 3 more, and volunteered with animal rescues while living in Texas, Arizona, and Nebraska. What started as a simple curiosity from wanting to get a dog soon grew to an active interest in helping animals that are put in poor circumstances because of human mistreatment and ignorance.
Of the millions of animals that are put to death each year, we know that many of them could be saved if more people simply adopted their pets. According to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 46% of owners obtain their dogs from breeders or private parties, while only 23% go through animal shelters, such as the Humane Society.
“What started as a simple curiosity, from wanting to get a dog, soon grew to an active interest in helping animals that are put in poor circumstances because of human mistreatment and ignorance.”
As a company that cares deeply about the well-being of our own pets and our customers’ pets, we realized that we could utilize our brand to help spread awareness about the benefits of adoption, not only for the animals themselves, but also for their human owners!
Benefits of adopting and fostering
Aside from the obvious benefits to the millions of animals that are left without homes every single year that would be housed and loved, adopting and fostering an animal is an excellent choice for a variety of reasons.
- It’s cheaper than going through a breeder. Many rescues and shelters provide all vaccinations and pay for spaying/neutering, which can help save hundreds of dollars.
- Rescues and shelters already take care of all the vet shots that your pets need
- You’ll be supporting your community’s animal rescue or shelter
- You can help break the cycle of animal overpopulation.
- Many rescues that can help you find whatever type of dog you’re looking for. Looking for a giant dog? There’s a rescue dedicated primarily to help save big dogs - Big Dogs Huge Paws
- Volunteers at rescues help educate you on how to be a good owner
- Many shelters already know the personality & traits of the dogs, so you can work with them on identifying the dog that fits your lifestyle
- You’re saving the life of an animal that could potentially be euthanized or locked in a kennel
How we’re supporting the cause of animals
As a company, we really love animals -- half of our employees are pet owners, and 30% of those adopted or foster their pets. And when we aren’t working hard to put hemp CBD into the hands of more and more people, we love partnering with charities and rescues that promote adoption.

This love for animals is a driving force in the products we offer at Populum. Our Zen Pets line features oil tinctures specially-made for pets, and we’ve recently launched an all-natural Hemp CBD Pet Chew product, which is formulated with wild Alaskan salmon and apples.
